The primary focus of the Prevention Department is to provide our unique "Life on the Streets" workshop to Manitoba schools, residential and lock-up facilities, post-secondary institutions, and other social service agencies.  The goal is to engage youth before (and sometimes after) they are faced with difficult decisions regarding their home life, their peers, their emotions, and ultimately their future.  The workshop is intended to help steer youth clear of a life on the street.  Issues facing today’s youth are complex and varied and the forum for discussion isn’t always available in the traditional classroom.  The "Life on the Streets" workshop is a no-nonsense presentation that highlights the real dangers associated with street-life.

The secondary function of the Prevention Department is to equip youth prevention speakers with skills in communication, group facilitation, and public speaking.  The Youth Speakers’ Bureau is a group of young people from varied backgrounds and experiences who share the common goal of educating the public about the realities of youth poverty and homelessness.  Having experienced the hardships associated with homelessness and poverty, these youth are able to share a wealth of experience and insight regarding this marginalized and often over-looked population.  They look to demystify and deglamourize the notion of running away and living on the street by telling you the facts straight, raw and to the point.  They speak the truth.

To book a "Life on the Streets" workshop, simply call the Prevention Coordinator at 783-5617 ext. 204 during regular business hours or email John Finkbeiner, Prevention Coordinator directly.  To offset the costs of programming, we kindly request an honourarium of $50.00 for workshops.
